Compare auto repair estimates by scope, not only by total
A practical way to compare parts, labour, diagnostic work, warranties, and assumptions.

Make sure the work is equivalent
Two totals are comparable only when they address the same problem and include the same operations. One estimate may include diagnosis, related hardware, calibration, shop supplies, or follow-up checks that another leaves out.
Read each cost category
Look for separate lines for parts, labour, diagnostic time, fees, and taxes. Ask whether parts are new, remanufactured, or customer-selected alternatives and whether the estimate can change after disassembly.

- Parts type and warranty
- Labour and diagnostic time
- Taxes, supplies, disposal, or environmental fees
- Approval process for additional work
Keep the decision documented
Save the accepted estimate and any approved changes with the vehicle record. A clear history helps with future maintenance and gives the next shop useful context.
