Describe what changed
A useful request explains what you noticed, when it started, and what was happening at the time. You do not need to identify the failed part before contacting a shop.
Record the sound, warning message, smell, vibration, leak, or change in performance in plain language. Note whether it happens when the vehicle is cold, braking, turning, accelerating, or travelling at a particular speed.
Bring the vehicle context
Year, make, model, approximate odometer reading, recent service, and previous repairs help the shop plan the appointment and ask better follow-up questions.
- Vehicle year, make, model, and engine when known
- Current odometer reading
- When the issue began and how often it occurs
- Recent repairs or maintenance
- Any dashboard message exactly as displayed
Ask what the appointment includes
Confirm whether the first appointment is an inspection, diagnosis, estimate, or approved repair. Ask how authorization works if the shop discovers additional work and how it will communicate changes to scope or price.
